There are a number of hapū and marae that have Rangitāne affiliations within the Rangitāne area of interest.  The Trust acknowledges that some of these will be considered by some as Ngāti Kahungunu hapū and marae. Where possible and where necessary, the Trust has tried to acknowledge where there are associations other than a Rangitāne one.

Rangitāne merely seek to outline the Rangitāne interests in these hapū and marae without undermining any other interests there.  The basis of these Rangitāne interests have been explained fully in evidence before the Waitangi Tribunal and held by Rangitāne kaumatua as oral traditional history.

The affiliated hapū of Rangitāne o Wairarapa are set out below.  It is noted that there are a number of hapū in south Wairarapa who trace their descent from both Rangitāne and Kahungunu.  These are referred to as ‘aho-rua’ hapū and are labelled as such in the following list:

  • Ngāti Hāmua;
  • Ngāti Tamahau;
  • Ngāti Te Raetea;
  • Hinetearorangi;
  • Ngāti Mātangiuru;
  • Ngāti Te Hina;
  • Ngāti Te Whātui;
  • Ngāti Te Noti;
  • Ngāti Tangatakau;
  • Ngāti Taimahu;
  • Te Hika o Pāpāuma;

  • Ngāti Meroiti (aho-rua);
  • Ngāti Hinetauira (aho-rua);
  • Ngāti Tauiao (aho-rua); and
  • Ngāti Moe (aho-rua).

There is a strong historical connection between Ngāi Tumapuhia-a-rangi and Rangitāne.  Although Rangitāne acknowledge the decision of this hapū to affiliate to Ngāti Kahungunu, many Ngāi Tumapuhia-a-rangi whānau are registered with Rangitāne also.  This is due to the fact that Ngāi Tumapuhia-a-rangi also trace descent to Rangitāne through Tukoroua and Hinematua.

The marae of Rangitāne o Wairarapa and those with Rangitāne affiliations are:

  • Te Ore Ore Marae;
  • Rangimarie Marae (also affiliates to Ngāti Kahungunu);
