The Crown wish to negotiate with Rangitāne to settle their historical claims but consider that to do so, all Rangitāne claims in the Wairarapa ki Tamaki Nui-ā-Rua region, including those represented by both Rangitāne o Tamaki Nui-ā-Rua Incorporated and Rangitāne o Wairarapa Incorporated (“the Rangitāne Rūnanga”), will need to be negotiated together. The claims to be negotiated by the Trust include a number of individual, whānau and hapū claims. The Trust will be responsible for settling those claims alongside the iwi-wide claims. The Crown has acknowledged that by Rangitāne working together and encompassing these claims, they meet the Crown policy of a large natural grouping for settlement purposes.
